Reject More Tax Cuts for the Rich

Congress is considering eliminating or drastically reducing the estate tax. Only the most extremely wealthy taxpayers are subject to the estate tax.

Eliminating the estate tax or enacting a bad reform will cost about $1 trillion when fully implemented. (Congress will also consider many other tax cuts that will benefit the well-off.)

Services for the poor, elderly, children and people with disabilities are already being slashed. Medicaid will be cut by $10 billion and Food Stamps are also threatened. Additional tax cuts will worsen the deficit, and will increase the likelihood of even deeper cuts in the future to services for the poor.

Write your representative and Senators and tell them to protect services and reject more tax cuts for wealthy few.

There are troubling reports that Congress is considering still more tax cuts for those who need help the least while cutting assistance for those who badly need it. I urge you to oppose legislation to eliminate or drastically reduce the estate tax. Eliminating the estate tax will cost about $1 trillion over ten years, with the benefits going exclusively to the richest one percent of our population. Multimillionaires will gain huge sums while Congress threatens to cut Medicaid, nutrition programs, housing, children’s services, education, and much more. These services offer help to families, elders, people with disabilities, usually with incomes far less than $20,000 a year. Congress should be making investments in services that help families earn more and that protect them when work is not possible. Cutting these services is exactly the opposite of what the nation needs, when 36 million Americans live in poverty and 45 million lack health insurance. I see the connection between cuts to essential services and tax cuts paid for with borrowed money. But even as Congress considers cuts that may deprive young and old of health care and food, it is making plans for numerous additional tax cuts – not only gutting the estate tax, but permanent cuts in the capital gains tax, and repealing the Alternative Minimum Tax – and doing all this knowing that it will lead to years of slashed services and gaping deficits. Please – take a stand for the right priorities. I urge you to oppose these irresponsible tax cuts and to defend the services that Americans need.
